Brand New: Our Present Power
by Jennifer Kvamme, Cadre Missionary of Encouragement
A. W. Tozer, in his book The Attributes of God, said, ?A local church will only be as great as its conception of God. An individual Christian will be a success or a failure depending on what he or she thinks of God. It is critically important that we have a knowledge of the Holy One, that we know what God is like.?
I was in high school when I really started to get this, to realize that the way one views God is the foundation for every other part of life. Many people live small lives because they have a tiny god. If we want to live powerful lives for His Kingdom, we must first of all be on the pursuit of knowing Him, compared to which Paul said everything else
was rubbish (Php. 3:8).
Because of this, a few years ago I wrote my first Bible study on the attributes of God and the way who He is affects our lives. The next year, I wrote a second one specifically on the character of Christ and the way we are called to imitate Him. So I wanted to complete the trilogy by writing one on the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is the least talked about and probably least understood member of the Trinity. We can talk about a Being in Heaven and a Man on a cross, but somehow a divine presence inside us is a little harder to get our minds around. But we live less than our full potential if we forget about the Holy Spirit because we were meant to live through His power and in His presence
The Holy Spirit is the third Person of Godhead, and if we know Christ, He dwells in each one of us. So it?s pretty important to understand His roles and how we?re called to respond. That?s what I tried to do through this Bible study. I in no way claim to fully explain every aspect of the Spirit or His actions?that would be impossible?but I wanted to help people understand, appreciate, and live more fully through the Holy Spirit.
Our Present Power was designed to be used in a small group Bible study (although you can certainly go through it on your own, as well). Each chapter begins with an icebreaker question, then an introduction with story or object parallel?some kind of concrete metaphor to help us somehow grasp the intangible. After that, there?s a chance for you to dig into some of the key passages on that aspect of the Holy Spirit.
Following that is a ?Think? section where we delve a little deeper into the passages and what it means for us that the Holy Spirit is our Counselor, Power, etc. Finally, there are ?Reflect? questions for discussion and introspection, and space to pray, journal, and investigate further passages if you so desire. Each lesson concludes with a short phrase to carry with you, something that encapsulates the gist of the study and hopefully allows you to continue processing it throughout the week.
My prayer is not just that this book will allow you to better understand the Holy Spirit but that it will also change the way you live by helping you to better listen, surrender, and follow. I hope you complete this study as amazed as I did at what it means that we have God Himself, in all of His power, living inside us.
